Vizag
is home to several state-owned heavy industries, a major steel plant,
and has one of India's largest sea ports and its oldest shipyard. It
has the only natural harbor on the east coast of India.
Major industries from all sectors including Bharat
Heavy Plates & Vessels, Hindustan Zinc Limited, Hindustan Petroleum
Corp. Ltd, Port Trust, Hindustan Ship Yard, Fishing Harbor,
Coramandel Fertilizers, L.G.Polymers, Essar Shipping are present in
Visakhapatnam. The Simhadri
Project of National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) is engaged into power
generation.
Besides the major
industries, Vizag has a number of Medium & Small Scale Industries being
developed by the AP Industrial Infrastructure Corporation.
Thanks to the
investor-friendly Industrial Policies by both Government of Andhra Pradesh and
the Government of India, special offers to foreign investors are available to
set up industries in hot sectors such as Manufacturing and Information
Technology. The Visakhapatnam
Special Export Zone (VSEZ) provides excellent infrastructure
for industrial units apart from special concessions for Export Oriented
Units (EOU).
Visakhapatnam's Hindustan Ship Yard is
one of the most prestigious one in the whole of India.
Various national and international IT and banking giants have set up or will be setting up offices in the city. These include Mahindra Satyam, Wipro, iSOFT, HSBC Sankhya Technologies, iFlex, Sutherland Global Services, Kenexa, E Centric Solutions Pvt Ltd,BPA and OpenWindow Technologies Inc.
